CELSI Frontiers Seminar: The gender wage gap in Sweden
Nov. 25, 2024
At the November's CELSI Frontiers Seminar, we discussed the gender wage gap in Sweden.
On Friday, November 22, Daniela Andrén (Associate Professor of Economics at Örebro University) presented her research paper titled "Effect of increasing female managerial presence on the gender wage gap in Sweden's private sector."
The presentation explored the impact of increasing female managerial representation on the gender wage gap in Sweden's private sector from 1997 to 2009.
The research revealed that while a higher proportion of female managers reduced men’s average wages by 5%, it had a smaller and statistically insignificant effect on women’s wages, particularly in male-dominated industries.
It also found that occupational segregation accounted for about 30% of the wage gap, underlining the role of structural factors in maintaining gender pay disparities.
The study concludes that while promoting female leadership is important, addressing occupational segregation and wage-setting practices is crucial for achieving genuine wage equality.
